See more than what there is…
In general, we see objects as they are described. The drapes in your living room, as just a window dressing, the small boulders along a pit stop pull off on the highway, or the side of a rock wall covered with mosses. They can be more. Sands dunes with a water element in the distance, an aerial view above a mountain ridge, a multi colored landscape of brush and foliage. I’ve been trying to see things from an alternative perspective. I used to be good at it, but I put it away for a few years and am just rusty now.
Spring quarter at school has been one that I’ve tried extra hard to absorb, in effort to keep my grades up but also in anticipation of a full summer off for the first time in over 13 years. I want to exceed my own expectations and discover what I am capable and I will have time to do it, something I haven’t had much of before. While I do have a newborn baby girl, as soon as I get the hang of momming, she will be a focal point in my images but also my little adventure buddy. I’m currently almost two weeks behind in my homework… but in my defense, the labor process was very difficult and it was followed by a 3 day stay in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
Throughout all of it though, I’ve been looking for something else in the places and things around me. There’s only a short amount of time before the quarter is over and I feel like I still have so much to do, partially because I feel I need to prove myself. There have been easy parts of this quarter, but I have found myself more than before reaching out for a better understanding of the material. I’ve been more open to criticism to help shape my approach to my future work and apply it to past work.
